A few years ago, I expanded my portrait offerings to include Modern Portraits of Women. I wanted to create authentic portraits of women that captured their beauty and strength at any age. I wanted my clients to feel empowered by the experience of the shoot itself in addition to having an elegant portrait of themselves as a keepsake.
Some women enjoy getting professional make up and dressed up for these sessions and others prefer jeans and a t-shirt. I have photographed high-powered professionals to formerly homeless women. I am moved by the experience each time.
This work drew me to ask more friends and family if I could make their portrait, something I hadn’t done enough of in recent years. Some of the women represented here are my mother and mother-in-law, both of whom I’ve photographed over the past 20+ years. Some are college friends that I did portraits of in the 80s and have photographed repeatedly ever since. Others are amazing women that I’ve only met recently and asked to photograph.
I decided to create portraits of the fourteen other members of my book club: a band of whip smart, irreverent, creative, politically engaged, feminist, hilarious, savvy women. They inspire me on many levels and represent the community I am a part of on Capitol Hill.
Traditional sororities never appealed to me but this group is the closest sisterhood I’ve had since that of my college friends. This group is more than a book club; it’s a social club, a running group, a support network, and a monthly dinner club. We often meet in between book club nights for drinks or to attend a book talk or political rally. We have traveled together in the US and overseas. We are fiercely loyal and champion one another and our kids. No matter what we are doing, we get loud when together and usually laugh until we weep.
The intimate process of capturing each book club member in her home has been a real gift. I look forward to photographing them all again in the future which shouldn’t be too hard as we often talk of living together in retirement.
